Berkshire NHS Trust Prospect Park Hospital Oakwood Ward

The second phase of the Prospect Park Hospital DOH dementia bid project was completed in June 2014. This 35 single room ward was transformed with colour and artwork to enhance the spaces for patients.

Arts in health consultancy Willis Newson were engaged to work with Hunter Design to transform the corridor areas. Artist Linda Schwab produced the artwork working with us to co-ordinate colours and themes.

The unit is divided into 3 wards and to aid orientation colours and themes of hobbies, flowers and seaside were used.

The main entrance has been transformed into a café with a freestanding welcome desk and glass screen which opens up the area to the rest of the unit.

A Garden Route around a planted courtyard encourages patients to exercise and sit to view the garden, framed photographs by staff and relatives are used to add colour and interest. An Activities room has been divided into 3 areas, a craft section, a library area with comfortable seating, and a seating area for board games. A large cabinet and table have been designed specifically for the display of reminiscence objects.
